It’s a cold and rainy ‘Stay Whole Tuesday’ in London. Winter has arrived. It’s time to dig out the gloves, scarves, and waterproofs. As the days get shorter, it feels right to slow down and start enjoying the holiday season. Yesterday, I added Derek Siver’s mantra, ‘Hell Yeah or No’ to My Flat Ass Rules.
What are flat-ass rules?
General James Mattis, a retired United States Marine Corps general and former U.S. Secretary of Defense, developed the concept. Gen Mattis is widely respected for his strategic thinking and leadership in military and civilian roles.
Know what you stand for and stick to it. Draw the line and hold it.
Flat-ass rules are your non-negotiables. Unwavering and unchanging.
What are my flat-ass rules?
- Succeed at home first
- Seek and merit divine help
- Seek wise counsel
- Build and use a challenge network
- Listen to my spouse (woman’s intuition)
- Live substantially below our income
- Have courage and strength at work
- Be kind and compassionate to others
- Learn something new every day
- Forgive and let go
- Hell Yeah! or no
Do you have a set of rules you try to live by?
