It’s MAKE Anything Thursday, and I’m still thinking about IKIGAI: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life.
One thing that MAKES me happy is walking across the London Waterloo Bridge to the Autodesk office in Charing Cross. Waterloo Bridge spans the River Thames. It connects the South Bank (near Waterloo station) and the Strand area on the north side. The view and that commute never get old, especially on a sunny day in London! See: Iconic Commutes on Stay Whole Tuesday.
Over the past 14 years, I have written over 1500 morning inspirational notes to my three amazing daughters. One topic I focused on often was Stephen Covey and his book, The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness. I often refer to a sentence in that book as the greatest ever written.

As I read IKIGAI for the first time, I was struck by how similar a key sentence in that book is to Covey’s sentence.
Let’s compare Covey’s sentence to IKIGAI:
- Covey: “When we engage in work that taps our talents and fuels our passions in a way that rises out of a great need in the world that we are drawn to by conscience to meet, we are living from our sweet spot, from our true calling, from our soul’s code.”
- IKIGAI: “Find the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid to do.”
That is the place we all hope to find. It is the subject matter of a book project I am developing called RELEVANCE: From Beginning to End. Learn more about this project under churnOn pub.
