Make Elite on Make Anything Thursday

Make Anything

Choose to be excellent and elite, says legendary University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban on Make Anything Thursday. Listen to Coach Saban describe the choices we all have when it comes to the type of individual we want to be.

You know, we have about five choices in our life. We can be bad at what we do. We can be average at what we do. We can be good at what we do – which probably is God’s expectation for whatever ability He gave us. Or we can be excellent, or we can be elite.

Everybody has a choice as to what they want to do and how they want to do that. But if you’re going to be excellent or elite, you’ve got to do special things. You have to have special intensity, you have to have a special focus, you have to have a special commitment, and drive, and passion to do things at a high level and a high standard all the time.

It doesn’t matter what God given ability that you have. That probably can make you good. But without the rest of it, I’m not sure if you ever get excellent or elite, and that’s the part that we’re trying to get to.

Our daughters all seem to get this, and that makes their mum and dad proud. We recently gifted the girls a ‘Visioning Workshop’, led by Shereen Hoban, the talented business and creative coach I engaged when I needed help getting every gPage Singletary thing over the line.

The half day workshop was held at the beautiful Artist Residence Hotel in Pimlico. The Artist Residence is a great example of how art and hospitality can intersect, offering guests both a place to stay and also an immersive artistic experience.

Shereen led the girls through a series of exercises designed to help them define their business, career, and life goals, as well as to imagine how they want to manifest those dreams.

Workshop pre-work included taking time to think about the following:
  • What’s your current focus? – Whether it’s your career, personal growth, or something creative, it’s helpful to pinpoint where your energy is right now.
  • What are you hoping to get out of this session? – Think about any specific goals or challenges you’d like to explore or work through together.
  • What’s been inspiring you lately? – This could be a project, a person, a book, or a podcast-anything that has sparked new ideas or motivation.
  • What do you want your personal or business brand to stand for? – Reflect on the message you want to send and how you want others to perceive you or your business.

In Shereen’s words:

Our session will focus on aligning your vision and values, setting clear goals, exploring opportunities, and defining your unique positioning. We’ll also spend time brainstorming, getting creative, and bouncing ideas off each other, so it will hopefully be a collaborative and energising experience. Whether you’re building a personal brand or growing a business, you’ll walk away with a solid, actionable plan to take you to the next level.

By all accounts, the workshop was a big success. All three girls came away energized and encouraged. I liked that Shereen not only guided them to envision their future goals, but also encouraged them to reflect on the kind of daily life they want to experience along the journey, shaping both their destination and the path they take to reach it. Said another way, ‘What do you want?’ is not the only question we should be asking ourselves. In one of the exercises, they designed what an ideal day in their life would be like in the future and in followup communication she has encouraged them to design the ideal week.

Sally shared that she might continue working with Shereen, as her business continues to flourish.

And speaking of, congrats to Sally for this latest accolade from Frederic, a highly respected design magazine that brings together high culture, timeless interiors, and sophisticated living. The install on this project was in July of 2023, and it was every Singletary girl on deck project, which makes sense when you see the scale! (See pics below from the install.)

NUGGETS began in the fall of 2010 when our oldest daughter left for college. (Make it a Great Monday; Stay Whole Tuesday; Woman Power Wednesday; Make Anything Thursday; and Fit as a Fiddle Friday.) All these years later, we have a UGA grad, a SCAD grad, a Fightin’ Texas Aggie grad, and 1500 nuggets. Plus, Mum and Dad up and moved to England. Those are my daughters above, and their guiding light – truly my every gPage Singletary thing.

Dear Harvey: Staying in the Game

In the end, Harvey, you left us your Little Red Book—a lifetime of lessons condensed into something small enough to fit in a pocket, yet broad enough to guide generations. These letters are my attempt, in a much humbler way, to do the same—to gather what the game has taught me so far, and to keep discovering what lies at the edges.

Lateral Thinking & AI: The Future of Making

Lateral Thinking + AI is a five-part Make Anything Thursday series exploring how artificial intelligence is reshaping not just the tools we use, but the way we think.
