The fancy websites and marketing slides make it look easy:
- connect your data,
- light up your dashboards,
- and voilà—a digital factory.
In reality, it’s more like wiring a city built over centuries. Some buildings run on solar. Others on steam. And even a few on hope.
From the Edges to the Core
Two weeks ago, I wrote about hidden devices—the billions of meters, sensors, and controllers that still speak in outdated dialects.
Last week, it was AI—how smart tools are helping humans make sense of the noise, without replacing the human judgment that keeps projects creative and safe.
Those two threads meet here.
A true digital factory depends on both:
- Connectivity that reaches every corner—not just the new PLCs, but the forgotten devices running Modbus or BACnet.
- Intelligence that interprets what the data actually means once it finally arrives.
The Five Phases, the Messy Way
My former Autodesk colleague, Detlev Reicheneder, describes the five phases of a digital factory: plan, design, validate, build, operate.
Spot on—but in practice, it’s rarely that neat.
Progress is patchwork. Political. Expensive. Each “connected” system needs a translator, a gateway, a custom script.
The vision sells integration; the work is translation.
Digitizing Imperfection
The real future of manufacturing won’t come from pretending the factory is seamless. It’ll come from people who understand both the data and the dust.
Maybe the most honest version of Industry 4.0 is this:
We’re not digitising perfection. We’re digitising imperfection—and learning to make it talk.
