Evidently, Cathy and I have become part of the furniture at BARCH Richmond. At least that’s the feeling I got after reading BARCH founder, Will Taylor’s Instagram post below.
When we arrived in London, we were looking for more than a gym. We needed community, we needed friends, and we needed routine. As expats trying to build a life in a new country, we were fortunate to stumble into Will and his remarkable gym, BARCH. After nearly five years of showing up, sweating, occasionally groaning, and trying our best to keep up with people half our age, I suppose we’ve become familiar fixtures around the place.
What struck me most about Will’s post wasn’t the kind words about strength or fitness. It was his observation that we simply keep turning up. Four sessions a week. Week after week. Month after month. Year after year.
Most mornings, you’re just rolling out of bed, putting on your trainers, and hoping Rachel or Emily or Carl hasn’t dreamed up a new way to make your lungs cry for mercy. The gains are almost invisible from one week to the next. But then one day you look back and realize those ordinary days have accumulated into something meaningful.
I suppose that is true of most worthwhile things in life. Marriage. Friendships. Parenting. Writing. Golf. Fitness. The big results rarely come from dramatic moments. They come from showing up consistently when nobody is paying attention.
Happy Fit as a Fiddle Friday.
