Ahead of Its Time: Or Right on Schedule?

In 2013–2014, we were already working to solve a problem that still appears across our industry. Small industrial gateway boxes were installed next to machines. Serial ports were wired into aging equipment. Cloud platforms started collecting telemetry from devices that were never meant to be networked. The goal was clear: connected products, smart factories, and closed-loop lifecycle intelligence.

The narrative was compelling. But the constraint was deeper than we acknowledged at the time. The hard part wasn’t visualization. It was reliable ingestion from messy physical systems.

The Vision Was Directionally Right

The main idea – that operational systems must become observable, measurable, and constantly connected – was sound. What was missing was the sense of inevitability built into the structure.

In 2013, industrial environments were mainly brownfield. OT and IT were separate both organizationally and technically. Security maturity in operational systems varied. Sustainability reporting was mostly narrative rather than verifiable. Adoption friction wasn’t about imagination; it was about system readiness.

At the time:

  • Factories were heterogeneous and highly customized.
  • Integration into legacy control systems was expensive and bespoke.
  • Security frameworks for OT environments were still emerging.
  • Executive interest existed – but without regulatory or financial compulsion.
  • As a result, IoT initiatives mainly existed within innovation portfolios. They had not yet become essential infrastructure.
What Has Changed

The ingestion challenge itself has not changed significantly. What has changed is the impact of not solving it.

Today, multiple enterprise priorities depend on trusted operational data at the edge:

  • Zero Trust enforcement, ensuring authenticated device identity and verifiable interactions.
  • Sustainability assurance (CSRD and beyond), requiring auditable emissions and resource telemetry.
  • AI deployment in industrial contexts depends on structured, contextually relevant real-world inputs.
  • Digital twin strategies require fidelity between the model and operation.
  • Cyber insurance and enterprise risk governance are increasingly tied to demonstrable control over operational systems.

These are no longer innovation initiatives. They are governance requirements. The shift is not technological. It is structural. The penalty for weak operational data is now material.

The Persistent Constraint

In previous cycles, the market emphasized outcomes: dashboards, predictive maintenance, and remote monitoring. These were tangible, marketable features.

But beneath them sat the same unresolved question:

Can operational data be extracted reliably, contextualized accurately, and verified with integrity?

If the first mile is weak, every downstream system inherits that weakness.

  • AI systems amplify flawed inputs.
  • Digital twins lose operational fidelity.
  • ESG reporting lacks defensible audit trails.
  • Security overlays operate on incomplete ground truth.

The ingestion layer is not visible. But it determines everything built on top of it.

Why It Did Not Scale Then

In 2014, curiosity was high. Compulsion was low. There was no regulatory enforcement directly linked to operational telemetry. No investor scrutiny requiring verifiable Scope 1 and Scope 3 reporting. No cyber insurance underwriting tied to OT security posture. No AI wave demanding industrial data at scale.

Without structural pressure, the adoption of infrastructure stays optional. Optional infrastructure seldom becomes deeply embedded in enterprises. The idea didn’t fail; the forcing functions just hadn’t yet aligned.

The Emerging Pattern

When proof is required, infrastructure becomes unavoidable. That is the pattern now seen across security, sustainability, AI, and digital operations. Multiple executive priorities – often managed in separate areas – now rely on the same core capability: trusted, contextualized operational data generated at the edge.

Any first-mile layer must be data-neutral. Industrial customers require platform-agnostic infrastructure that preserves provenance, security, and control regardless of downstream system choice. Neutrality at the OT boundary is not anti-platform – it is what enables durable ecosystem participation.

This isn’t an IoT story. It is an infrastructure narrative. It is about the first mile.

Ahead of Its Time — Or Right on Schedule?

Perhaps the more accurate framing is this: The idea was not early. The market discipline was.

Today, assurance requirements are converging:

  • Security posture must be demonstrable.
  • Sustainability metrics must be defensible.
  • AI outputs must be grounded.
  • Operational resilience must be provable.

Each of these relies on a layer that has historically been regarded as integration plumbing rather than strategic infrastructure. When that layer becomes shared across multiple governance mandates, it ceases to be experimental and becomes leverage.

Organizations that identify shared constraints early tend to develop platforms differently than those that respond to them reactively and in isolation. The question isn’t whether connected operational data matters, but whether we see the first mile as an afterthought or as a strategic foundation.

That seems less like reliving the past.

And more like identifying a structural inflection point.
