Dear Harvey,Cathy and I headed to Cornwall last weekend. I could not recall anticipating the first tee as much as this one at Trevose Golf & Country Club. (Apologies to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and Pine Valley Golf Club.)
We arrived in time for our Saturday 4:30PM knock-around, hopped out of the Peugeot (rental car), and took dead aim at the Quies Rock on the left. [What are Quies Rocks?]
Links golf is fun. I must admit to being addicted to ‘collecting’ these experiences, not to mention golf jumpers, logoed balls, and ball markers. Head Professional Gary Lenaghan made sure we felt at home in the shop and around the club. The club secretary, Mr. David Cowan, was also kind to us. David has worked for the family owners of the club for 35 or so years: Steeped in ancient history extending back over many centuries.
You would be proud of Cathy as her game continues to improve. She now plays 18 holes on any type of course. I am lucky she is such a good athlete, not to mention a good sport about playing with me! Special thanks to three of your disciples: Barbara Puett, Cathy’s first golf teacher during the Pandemic, takedeadaim1899 Ann Marie Gildersleeve, and Dylan Jackson (now at Southern Hills Country Club) for the excellent coaching and encouragement. And a shout out to George Thompson, Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club, for his help on this side of the pond. (My gal deserves the best!)

“Opened in 1925 the Championship Course has played host to The Brabazon Trophy (2008), The McGregor Trophy (2012), the English Men’s County Finals (2017), and the inaugural farmfoods European Legends Links Championship (2019) in recent years. Designed by H.S. ‘Harry’ Colt it ranks as one of the UK’s top links golf courses. Along with the likes of Augusta National, Pine Valley, Sunningdale, Royal Portrush and Muirfield, Trevose is in good company within the ‘Colt’ family of courses.” [Source: Club Website]

“Millions of people were charmed by the homespun golf advice dispensed in Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book, a sports classic that became the best-selling sports book of all time. Yet, beyond the Texas golf courses where Penick happily toiled for the better part of eight decades, few people knew the self-made golf pro who coaxed the best out of countless greats — Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Betsy Rawls, Mickey Wright — all champions who considered Penick their coach and lifelong friend.” – Kevin Robbins, author of Harvey Penick: The Life and Wisdom of the Man Who Wrote the Book on Golf.
