There are snow flurries here in Richmond today! It’s hard to believe Mum and I played golf at a remarkable place yesterday. It was nippy but beautiful nonetheless, and the first nine holes included peekaboo sunshine. The course was a return visit for me to Woking Golf Club, home of famous golf writer Bernard Darwin, the grandson of evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin.
Woking GC is one of ‘The Three W’s’ in Surrey County that are highly regarded. The other two are West Hill Golf Club and Worplesdon Golf Club. Woking is often considered the home of modern-day golf course architecture, as it was one of the first courses not designed in a 9-hole out, 9-hole back manner, but more of a loop or circle through the land. It also has a famous hole (no. 4) that is believed to be the first time an architect placed a bunker in a fairway in a central landing area. Dr Alister MacKenzie came to Woking GC to get inspiration for the design of Augusta National after being hired by Bobby Jones.
